What is remarketing / retargeting?

Imagine you visit a website, like say Nike.com, and see a pair of shoes you really like. Then you leave that website and go somewhere else, like NYTimes.com. And while you're reading an article, off to the side, or maybe in the middle of the article: there they are again! It's an ad for the shoes you were looking at elsewhere. This magic is called remarketing, or sometimes retargeting.
